The conversion of bentley manor to provide an additional facility for the natural childcare company was the first project completed by a:nw for the ofsted outstanding rated company. Since completion the childcare centre at bentley manor has also been awarded outstanding by ofsted.
The building has four main nursery rooms converted from the old victorian villa and is able to cater for up to 90 children from babies to preschool.
The building was previously used as offices for a software house, and prior to that was a nursing home, although originally it was a large countryside villa house. The conversions over the years had robbed many of the buildings features but where possible items such as the stained glass windows and ornate staircase where enhanced as part of the refurbishment and adaptation to become the childcare centre.
The building is in green belt and whilst no significant changes were made to the building, change of use meant planning approval was required. Amongst other consultants a:nw assisted the client in achieving permission in summer 2013. The facility opened in spring 2014.
The extensive grounds create an amazing outdoor play area with superb opportunities for creative play and learning . a:nw provided the design for the permanent play surfaces with two translucent canopied areas, the pathways and the fencing.
Internally partition reconfiguration, new toilet facilities , offices, replaced doors, reception and accessible entrance as well as a complete redecoration were designed by a:nw. Derived from the company logo a palette of colours was developed to distinguish nursery rooms and to enhance in a cohesive manner all the other spaces. These vibrant colours give accent to spaces and create a branded theme that has been used at the new childcare centre at the old shirley library.
